Singles Draw Includes 10 of the Top 11 Ranked American Players
And Two Players Formerly Ranked #1 in the World
Individual Tickets to the 2007 SAP Open Go On Sale Monday, January 8 at 10 a.m.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The SAP Open, the premier men’s professional tennis tournament in Northern California, today announced the 2007 singles field of players. Included in the singles draw are players representing 11 countries including the USA, Great Britain, Croatia, Russia, Germany, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Spain, Denmark, Canada and Thailand. The singles field also includes 10 of the top 11 ranked American players and includes two former world’s #1 ranked players in Andy Roddick (USA) and Marat Safin (RUS). Also included in the singles draw are two former SAP Open singles champions in Roddick and defending champion Andy Murray (GBR) and three former SAP Open doubles champions in James Blake (USA), Mardy Fish (USA) and Hyung-Taik Lee (KOR). The 2007 SAP Open will be played February 12-18 at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

At the age of 24, two-time SAP Open champion Andy Roddick has already experienced much success in his career, especially at the SAP Open where he captured titles in 2004 and 2005. In 2007, Roddick will attempt to win his third SAP Open title in four years. Currently No. 6 in the Indesit ATP Singles Rankings, Roddick played great tennis this past year, capturing the singles title at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tournament in Cincinnati, OH. Roddick was also a singles finalist at the U.S. Open where he lost a hard fought match to the world’s top-ranked player, Roger Federer. I addition, Roddick reached the singles final at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis, IN this past July. The 2007 SAP Open will be Roddick’s sixth appearance in San Jose in the last seven years.
At just 19-years old, Scotland’s Andy Murray enters the 2007 SAP Open as the tournament’s defending champion. Last February, surprising players and fans alike, Murray defeated Roddick in the semifinals and Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the final to capture the 2006 SAP Open title, his first career ATP circuit title. In addition to his championship performance at the SAP Open, this past summer Murray reached the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C. and also made semifinal appearances at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, RI and the ATP Masters Series Canada in Toronto, Canada. At the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tournament in Cincinnati, OH, he served notice to the tennis world when he shocked world’s #1 Roger Federer in straight sets. One of the fastest rising players on the ATP circuit, Murray is currently ranked #17 in the Indesit ATP Singles Rankings. In his brief career, Murray has already earned an impressive $912,881 in prize money.
Currently the top American player on the ATP Worldwide Tour, James Blake enters the 2007 SAP open in search of his first singles title in San Jose. Blake, 26, returns to the 2007 SAP Open for the sixth consecutive year and playing the best tennis of his professional career. He had a strong year in 2006, winning titles at Sydney, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Bangkok & Stockholm – and reached the final of Indian Wells, Queens Club and the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. Many still remember his performance at the 2005 U.S. Open, where Blake handily beat world’s #2 Rafael Nadal before losing a grueling five-set quarterfinal match to Andre Agassi. The Blake-Agassi match drew one of the highest cable television ratings in U.S. Open history. An All-American at Harvard University before turning professional, Blake is currently the top-ranked American at #4 and has complied total prize money career winnings of $4.2 million.

This 26-year-old Russian is a former No. 1 player in the world who owns a career record of 338-192 – including 15 career singles titles. Among his list of accomplishments, Safin has captured two Grand Slam titles – the 2000 U.S. Open title (defeated Pete Sampras) and the 2005 Australian Open title (defeated Lleyton Hewitt). Most recently, Safin made the round of 16 at the 2006 US Open. A pro since 1997, Safin led the ATP with seven titles in 2000 and that year became the youngest player to finish #2 since 19-year old Boris Becker in 1986. He’s earned over $12.7 million in career prize money.
