Bay Area cities implement curfew after George Floyd protests turn violent with looting, vandalism
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Citywide curfews have been issued in various locations in the Bay Area after protests over the death of George Floyd turned destructive.
San Francisco implemented a curfew, but then lifted it on Wednesday, June 3. The order required everyone within the city to stay home from the designated times.
See below for which cities and counties have curfews, and where the curfews have been canceled.
EAST BAY
ALAMEDA COUNTY
The Alameda County Sheriff's Department lifted its curfew, effective immediately, on Thursday, June 4. It had been in effect since Monday, June 1. Some cities in Alameda County still have curfews in place, and those still apply despite the change at the county-level.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
On Thursday, June 4, Contra Costa County canceled its countywide curfew that began 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 2. "This action does not affect any city curfews that remain in effect," the city said on Twitter.
ANTIOCH
The curfew will begin each night at 6:00 PM and expire at 5:00 AM on Wednesday, June 3. After June 3, Antioch is following the curfew orders set by Contra Costa County.
FREMONT
Fremont has a curfew in effect from June 1 to June 8 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. When Alameda County rescinded its curfew on Thursday, June 4, the Fremont Police Department said its curfew would remain in effect, but they would reevaluate the situation later in the week.
OAKLAND
Oakland officials declared a local emergency and issued a curfew starting Monday, June 1 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Thursday, June 4 Mayor Libby Schaaf announced the curfew would be lifted effective immediately. "We will continue to facilitate safe spaces for our residents to demonstrate and express themselves peacefully and passionately. As a native Oaklander, I am proud of our city's long tradition of fighting for social justice," she said on Twitter.
ORINDA
The city of Orinda is joining other Bay Area cities to enforce a curfew starting Monday, June 1 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
City officials say the following are exempt from the order: travel for Individuals traveling directly to and from work, attending religious services, commercial trucking and delivery services, obtaining food, caring for a family member, friend, or animal, patronizing or operating private businesses, seeking medical care or fleeing dangerous circumstances. Travel for any of the listed services is also allowed.
DANVILLE
The curfew ended Thursday, June 4, 2020.
Danville has declared a State of Emergency due to civil unrest. Additional police personnel have been activated and are maintaining patrols throughout town.
HAYWARD
The city of Hayward originally implemented a citywide curfew, then rescinded it in favor of Alameda County's countywide curfew. That curfew has since been canceled, and there is no curfew in effect in Hayward.
LAFAYETTE
Lafayette is implementing a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. which will remain in effect until further notice.
PLEASANT HILL
Pleasant Hill canceled its curfew Thursday, June 4, effective immediately. The city previously had a curfew in effect starting Monday, June 1 from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
There will be exceptions to the curfew that allow essential activities to continue, such as for the media, medical service providers and others.
RICHMOND
The city of Richmond has rescinded the city-wide curfew order of 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
SAN LEANDRO
The city of San Leandro has modified their curfew to take place from 6 p.m. until 5 a.m. until June 8.
Officials say all residents are directed to stay home except emergency responsers, those seeking medical care, those traveling to and from work and the unsheltered.
WALNUT CREEK
Officials issued a curfew for Monday, June 1 from 6 p.m. until 5 a.m. and continues through June 8. Walnut Creek police say public safety personnel, health care providers, people traveling to and from work and media representatives are exempt from the curfew.
Curfew went into effect in Walnut Creek Sunday night after looters wreaked havoc in several stores at Broadway Plaza shopping center.
SAN FRANCISCO
UPDATE: Mayor London Breed announced the city would lift its curfew starting Thursday, June 4, 2020. The curfew was first implemented on May 31, 2020.
"The protests we have seen in this city and across the country are for an important cause and our city will continue to facilitate any and all peaceful demonstrations," Breed said on Twitter. "Following Saturday night, it was important for the safety of our residents to ensure that we could prevent the violence and vandalism that had taken place, but we know that the overwhelming majority of people out protesting are doing so peacefully and we trust that will continue."
NORTH BAY
SOLANO COUNTY
Solano county officials imposed a Countywide Local Emergency and curfew order on Tuesday evening, June 2, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. The emergency order ended at 5:00 a.m. on June 4, 2020.
NAPA COUNTY
A curfew for residents in American Canyon and a small area of unincorporated Napa ended on June 3, 2020. The Napa County Sheriff's office ordered the curfew after looting in Vallejo. The Napa Co. Sheriff's office tweeted that the order is for "precautionary measure to keep the community safe and secure."
SOUTH BAY
SANTA CLARA
The city of Santa Clara officially ends its 8:00 p.m. curfew on Tuesday afternoon.
The local state of emergency remains in effect as the City of Santa Clara maintains vigilance and the ability to respond quickly to any threats to public safety. More information on the city's lifted order here.
SAN JOSE
San Jose's curfew began on Sunday, May 31 and ended at 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 4.

The city of Palo Alto issued an 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew in effect from the night of June 2 to the morning of June 11. It was terminated on June 4.
SAN MATEO COUNTY
The county has issued a curfew from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for two nights, starting the evening of June 2 and ending the morning of June 4.
