매년 미국의 Top School Report가 많이 나오고 있습니다.
모든 리포트들의 근거는 단순한 미국학생 전체의 API성적일수가 없습니다.
미국 전국적으로 똑같은 시험을 치루지는 않습니다.
여러가지를 자체 분석해서 이러한 리스트를 만들게 됩니다.
학교마다, 공부 못하는 하위 학생들에게 시험을 보지 않도록 가이드 하는 학교정책, 혹은 선생님들을 가진 학교들도 있는 실정입니다. 이런 정책을 시행하는 학교가 좀 늘고 있는것 같습니다. 물론 정정당당하게 학생들을 모두 시험에 응하게 하는 학교가 많겠지요. 이 외에도 수 많은 변수가 있습니다.
또한 모든 리포트들의 리스트는 정말 많은 차이를 보입니다.
예를 두개만 들자면 (이외에도 수많은 리포트들이 발표되었습니다.),
(1) US News에서는 미전역에서 뽑은 상위 100위인 고등학교를, 골드메달 스쿨리스트로 분류해놓았습니다.
여기에 보면 베이에리어의 거의 유명한 모든 학교가 명시되어있습니다.
(로웰, 미션 산호세, 건, 팔로알토, 몬타, 피드몬트, 사라토가, 린부륵 등등등..)
(2) Newsweek 에서는 미전역의 상위 100위 학교리스트중,
베이에리어에서는 오직 2007년자료엔, 로웰, 몬타비스타만 명시되어 있습니다.
2006, 2005년들도 볼수 있는데 자료는 또 다른 학교를 명시해놓고 있습니다.
미국에서 나오는 수많은 리포트들이 사실상 정확한 학교의 랭킹이 될수는 없다는 것이죠. 단지 약간의 참고사항일 뿐입니다.
사실상 미 전역의 하이스쿨이 1600 여개에 달한다고 합니다.
여기서 100등을 하나 200등을 하나 우리에게 무슨 큰 차이가 있겠습니까?
물론 100등인지 1500등인지는 차이가 많겠지요.
베이에리어에서 전통적으로 유명한 좋은 학교들은 각각 학교나름대로의 장점과 특성, 전통들이 있을 뿐입니다. 다른 지역의 학교를 헐뜯을 필요도 없고, 본인 지역의 학교만 좋다고 우길 필요는 없다고 생각합니다.
다만 각자의 취향에 따라, 능력에 따라 가게 되는 것일 뿐입니다.
부동산 섹션에 이글이 있는이유는, 부동산 가격에 학교성적이 어느정도 반영된다고 보나, 그다지 큰 부분은 아닌것 같습니다. 미션 산호세 성적이 많이 좋지만, 부동산 가격은 다른 지역 만큼 못미치는것 같네요. 애썰튼 최고로 비싼지역 (지역내 보통수준 집값이 5밀리언 이상) 인것 같은데, 학교는 별로인것 같고요. 부동산가격은 수많은 지역 특성들이 반영되는것 같습니다.
제 생각엔 베이에리어에 사는 것 만으로도 우리 자녀들에게 학교 뿐만 아니라 환경상 많은 교육적으로 바람직한 혜택이 주어진다고 생각합니다...
